Put the Drum Head in the Correct Position
Before you start tuning your drums you will need the empty drum shell. Clean the drum shell and the drum head with a dry cloth before doing anything else. This will stop dirt and grit damaging them when you begin tuning. Put the drum head on the shell and make sure it fits properly. The drum head should fit easily onto the drum shell without being too loose.
Tighten the Lugs
Once you have the drum shell in place tighten the lugs just a little bit. You are not trying to tune at the moment the drums at the moment.
All you want to do it secure the drum head to the drum shell in preparation for tuning. Make sure to stretch the drum head slightly once it has been secured in position. You can do this by pressing down gently on the membrane. This will help to prevent your drums from falling out of tune quickly.
Now it’s time to tune the drum to the correct pitch. It is important to remember here that tightening the lugs one after the other will cause an uneven stretching on your drum head. Instead follow these simple steps.
Pick the lug closest to you. We will call this lug 1. Tighten it 1 full turn Tighten the lug directly opposite lug 1 by 1 full turn Tighten the lug immediately to the left of lug 1 by 1 full turn. We will call this lug 3 Tighten the lug directly opposite lug 3 by 1 full turn Continue to do this until all the lugs have been tightened by 1 full turn
Tune Your Drums
Play one beat close to lug 1 and listen to the sound. If the sound is correct at this lug use it as the base for tuning the rest of the lugs.
